An Invitation from Darcy
Joan Grim to visit
Riverby, the John
Burroughs House

RIVERBY,
the stone cottage designed and built by the great naturalist John Burroughs,
will be presented for a partial viewing on August 17, 2008, by its steward,
Darcy Joan Grim, in coordination with Hudson River Heritage. Riverby was built
in 1873 of hand-picked stone on the small fruit farm that Burroughs purchased as
much for the stone as for the inspirational Hudson River setting. Since then,
Riverby has been continuously occupied and in the possession of John Burroughs’s
family and their descendants. Although the current restoration is far from
complete, the family invites you to see a living snapshot of that ongoing
process along with some never before revealed insight on the family side of the
Hudson Valley’s own and still very relevant philosopher.
HRH will meet
at 4:00 on the lawn of Riverby in West Park, on Rt. 9W
some 7 miles south of Kingston in Ulster County. After brief introductions,
remarks, and a presentation on our subject, the assembled will have an
opportunity to walk the short distance to the Bark Study, now a National
Historic Landmark, where Burroughs wrote before his passing in 1921. For those
willing and able to make the steep descent via old roads and a trail, the river
is near with a beautiful shale beach backed by cliffs and a breathtaking view
of Vanderbilt Mansion and Bard Rock. If you’d like, bring a picnic for
afterwards. During the event, HRH will have water on hand and restrooms
available.
DIRECTIONS:
Driving south on Route 9W from Kingston
7.3 miles, you’ll pass the Church of the Ascension on your left. Proceed down
the hill and turn right into Floyd Ackert Road at the West Park Post Office.
Turn around and go left back onto Rt. 9W, coming part-way up the hill. Turn
right onto Chambers Road (between orange cones) immediately after a villa on
that side of Rt. 9W. Follow signs to parking. Coming from the south, go
on Rt. 9W about 5.4 miles from the Rt. 44/55 intersection at Highland, across
the bridge from Poughkeepsie, and look for Chambers Road on your right after
you’ve passed the West Park PO on your left. Turn right between cones.
Reservations are required! Parking is limited!
