Hudson River Heritage (HRH) is a nonprofit membership organization committed to preserving the unique character of the Mid-Hudson Valley's historic architecture, rural landscapes and scenic viewsheds through advocacy and education. HRH acts as steward for the Hudson River National Historic Landmark District, a 32-square-mile area stretching from Staatsburg, in Dutchess County to Clermont, in Columbia County.

In addition to the Country Seats Tour, HRH sponsors an annual spring landscape symposium exploring the romantic era landscapes of the Mid-Hudson Valley, and a variety of other events. Recent HRH lectures have focused on local archeology, the villa tradition, and ice boating on the Hudson. Our field trips have included the Sawkill Ravine, Franklin D. Roosevelt's Top Cottage, and A.J. Davis's Plumb-Bronson House.

In our role as a preservation advocate, Hudson River Heritage works with various historic sites and community groups, including the Great Estates Consortium, Clover Reach, and the Northern Dutchess Alliance, and makes comment on proposals for change along the Hudson River corridor. HRH is currently at work on a major guide map of the Mid-Hudson region, which will introduce many previously unpublicized facets of our area to residents and visitors.

Hudson River National Historic Landmark District
This extraordinary district is comprised of four towns, four hamlets, two villages, over forty riverfront estates, and the designed landscapes, farmland, and distinctive natural features in between. To a remarkable degree, the character of the 20-mile long, 22,205-acre Hudson River National Historic Landmark District remains intact. HRH sponsored the research and led the process culminating in this prestigious 1990 National Historic Landmark designation.

National Trust Declares Hudson Valley Endangered
In 2000, the National Trust for Historic Preservation named New York's Hudson Valley one of America's "Eleven Most Endangered Historic Places." When announcing its selection, the National Trust characterized the region as "a mix of scenery and history that is unmatched anywhere else in the country," and noted the grave threat posed to this rich legacy by proposed large-scale re-industrialization and encroaching sprawl. In an important collaborative effort, the Valley's nomination was spearheaded by HRH and Scenic Hudson, and submitted jointly by a team of regional preservation and environmental organizations.
